While I was out: Catching up with a Linkfest

The best thing about a vacation is getting a chance to slow down a bit, dialing back the hectic pace of modern working life. However, there is such a thing as slowing down too much.
And, sadly, that’s what I did on my week off. I caught a cold just as last weekend was starting, forcing me to miss the Geek Gathering/Battlestar Galactica watch party, and it was downhill from there. All the nice plans I’d made were scuttled by a tenacious rhinovirus. I’m still not recovered completely.
Many thanks to Jim Thompson, who did admirable work keeping up the daily linkposts while I was out, despite the fact that he has a demanding day job helping build spacecraft. Jim, I owe you a lunch, claimable at your convenience (and when I’m more pleasant to be around!).
While I’d hoped to be as offline as possible during the week, I wound up having plenty of time on my hands, so I periodically looked at what was going on. Here are few items from last week worth commenting on:
